This series of placemaking proposals focus on revitalizing a disadvantaged area in Houston. By analyzing the needs of the community, the design team suggested re-activating the area by lighting a walkway with lanterns that created a safer environment for commuters. The lanterns, inspired by the surrounding culture are die-cut with inspiring messages written in both English and Spanish to motivate passerby’s as they navigate through their daily route. When illuminated, the lights reflect the messages across the sidewalk creating a unique look to light the path. The lanterns are bright in color alerting cars and creating a barrier between the sidewalk and street. The goal is to create a safer environment for all.
